There are plenty of reasons why Marijuana should be legal. It measures in terms of liberty were people deserve the freedom to use marijuana, the cost where as keeping marijuana illegal is expensive and failure from prohibition of the drug. Let’s discuss further on these issues.
There is no good reason for marijuana not to be legal. People wonder why it should be legalized. Marijuana has more contributions in the economic world. It can be a valuable natural resource. It has many industrial uses such as making rope, cloth, paper and fuel. It can be used as medicinal drug because it helps to enhance appetite and relive nausea in cancer patients. Individuals deserve the right to make choices for themselves. The local government only has the right to limit those choices if the person’s behavior endangers another. However, this does not apply to marijuana since the person who freely chooses to use marijuana does in accordance to his or her own will. Though the government has the right to limit one’s actions in an individual, this does not logically apply to marijuana because marijuana is far less dangerous compared to other drugs that are legal namely alcohol and tobacco. Individuals deserve to pick a choice whether or not they should use marijuana. For as long as it does not harm or threat other people, the government doesn’t have the right to tell individuals what to do.
The reason that marijuana should be legal is that it saves our government from spending lots of money. In the US, all level governments including the federal, state and the local authorities participate on the “war on drugs program”. Billions of dollars annually will be spent from chasing peaceful people who happen to like to get high. These certain people got locked up in jail and the taxpayers have to foot the bill. But we have the obligation to pay for our daily food consumption, housing, health care and other expenses to lock up these people. Definitely it is very expensive. If we stop silently nagging to those people who are using marijuana and stop wasting money locking them up in prison then billions of dollars every year will be saved from our economy. In addition to that, if marijuana were legal then the government would be able to collect taxes out of it and would spend more money to pay for effective drug education programs and other important causes. Everything will be affected because we would be spending more money on important causes if marijuana were legal.
Prohibition doesn’t help anymore. It is only a failure. Why? Because it does not help the country in many ways, otherwise it only causes a lot of dilemma. There is no certain proof that deprivation or prohibition decreases drug use. Marijuana is very popular in America especially in high schools because it is plainly available and there’s no age requirement before you can purchase the drug. For as long as you have money, the marijuana dealers don’t care of who you are and of how old are you. They are not concern of you in many ways as long as they can earn from their product. Actually, it is easier for many high school students to obtain marijuana in order for them to obtain alcohol because alcohol is legal and therefore regulated to keep it away from kids. If the only aim is to reduce drug consumption then we should focus on open and honest programs to educate youth, regulation to keep drugs away from kids, and treatment programs for people with drug problems. However the existing scheme does not allow such reasonable approaches to marijuana. Instead, we are stuck with police officers spreading lies about drugs in schools, and policies that result in jail time rather than treatment for people with drug problems. For one more thing, prohibition with alcohol failed miserably. Each of us should be able to learn our lesson and stop repeating the same mistake. In terms of religion, like some of the Hindus and other religious members; they use marijuana as part of their spiritual and religious ceremonies. These people are free to practice their freedom without the government giving them orders what to do. The first amendment to the U.S Constitution says that the government cannot the free exercise of the religion and so marijuana should be legal. Prohibition does not work at all. The good thing here is to have focus on education, treatment and better ways to address the drug problem.
